What Are Varicose Veins?

The venous system is a combination of pipes ‘your veins’, pumps ‘the calf muscles’ and one-way ‘vein’ check valves. When the system works efficiently your veins carry blood up your leg veins toward your heart even in the face of gravity.

Varicose Leg veins develop in the superficial leg veins when the venous system fails. The most common source of failure is with your one-way vein check valves. If they do not function properly, blood pools (reflux) within the affected veins. The pooling of blood results in bulging varicose veins. Over time, reflux leads to progressive varicose vein development and symptoms. Varicose veins include reticular varicose veins (1-3 mm) and bulging varicose veins (3mm or >).

What are the Symptoms of Varicose Veins?

Varicose vein symptoms can be vague and can easily be missed by the patient and their doctors. Among these symptoms are heaviness, tired achy legs, leg swelling, throbbing/burning/itching, night leg cramps, and Restless Legs. The two most common reasons for patients with varicose veins to go to the ER is a bleeding varicose vein and blood clots. Delayed care can lead to skin changes and venous ulcers. You may be surprised to learn that you can have ‘hidden vein disease’ with vein reflux and symptoms without visible varicose veins.

As the leader in Comprehensive Vein Care®, VSS can get to the bottom of your concerns about your leg health. Having served more than 22,000 patients since 1996 at VSS, veins are not just one thing we do, they are the only thing we do.®

What are your Risks of Developing Varicose Veins?

Risks of developing varicose veins:

  • Age: As you age, your veins grow weaker and more susceptible to vein disease.
  • Genetics: Genetics is the number one contributing factor for developing vein disease.
  • Obesity: Anything that puts excessive pressure on the veins, such as obesity, can cause vein disease.
  • Gender: Women are more likely to develop vein disease than men.
  • Lifestyle: People with careers that result in sitting or standing for long periods of time can have a higher chance of developing varicose veins.
  • Pregnancy: Pregnancy increases your risk of developing varicose veins.

What Comprehensive Vein Care® Treatments are Available at VSS?

Conservative care is the cornerstone of the VSS Better Veins for Life® Principles designed to preserve your vein health.

Endovenous Thermal Ablation heat or ‘thermal’ energy treats the number one cause of varicose veins, reflux in the Great and/or Small Saphenous Veins. A tiny radiofrequency catheter or laser fiber is inserted into the diseased saphenous vein under ultrasound guidance.  The heat energy seals the vein shut and the body absorbs the ‘bad’ vein over time. The long term success rate is above 95% in our hands.

VenaSeal is a ‘non-thermal’ based system to treat Saphenous Vein reflux. The Saphenous Vein is sealed with a medical-grade adhesive under ultrasound guidance.  The need for local anesthesia is limited to the catheter insertion site. Saphenous reflux is reduced in > 95% of treatments, redirecting blood flow into the healthy veins, where it belongs.

Varithena® is a ‘non-thermal’ based system that uses a proprietary foam sclerosant to treat the refluxing Saphenous Veins, their tributaries or branch varicose veins. The injectable foam sclerosant damages the lining of the affected saphenous vein, which scars closed, redirecting the blood flow to nearby healthy veins.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive Walk in. Walk out.® treatment for bulging varicose veins. Large varicose veins can be removed under local anesthetic through tiny incisions (2mm) that rarely require stitches.  It is a one and done procedure.

Sclerotherapy is used for recurrent varicose veins and saphenous reflux at VSS. A ‘foamed’ sclerosant Varithena® solution is injected into the veins collapsing the vessel and redirecting blood flow. If blood is ‘trapped’ in the treated segment of the vein, evacuation speeds healing. Additional treatments may be needed for a complete treatment of the refluxing veins.

What Results Should I Expect?

Like most patients, your satisfaction is based on the relief of your symptoms and improvement in the appearance of your legs following your vein procedures.  The severity of your vein problems and the procedure selected to correct them determines how quickly you’ll see results. With our VSS Better Veins. Better Life.® plan, most patients report immediate and dramatic improvement in both the symptoms and appearance of their legs.

Many things set VSS apart, but one of the most important is our approach to vein care. Unlike many other vein centers, we do not subscribe to a ‘wait and see’ attitude when treating your vein problems. Rather we prefer to treat the underlying cause of your vein problems, your visible bulging varicose veins and your cosmetic spider veins with a systematic plan that works.

Your customized plan treats the saphenous reflux (if needed) and the bulging varicose veins in the first wave of treatments. In 4-6 weeks you can begin your series of cosmetic sclerotherapy treatments for spider veins if present.

If you have saphenous vein reflux, it is corrected with an endovenous procedure and the venous blood flow is rerouted to healthy veins and symptoms improve quickly. We prefer ambulatory phlebectomy over the other options for bulging symptomatic varicose veins (‘wait and see’ and sclerotherapy). With this approach, your bulging veins and associated symptoms are gone at the end of your procedure.

Don’t fall for the line that nothing can or should be done about your bulging veins and leg pain. At VSS, our Better Veins. Better Life.® plan is a game-changer. Thousands of others just like you love the results and you can, too.
