As a small business owner, the VSS team identifies with your desire to have engaged and productive employees. Poor vein health affects the personal and professional lives of your team and your bottom line with increased health insurance expenses and lost time at work. Our VSS Employee Corporate Wellness Plan is designed with common-sense preventive measures and individualized vein care plans to get your team back on their feet again.
Most industries have jobs that require prolonged standing or sitting, such as assembly line workers, security staff, engineers, laboratory technicians, pharmacists, nurses, doctors, teachers, office staff, and many others. Our VSS vein wellness program may lower the work-related risks of chronic vein disease associated with standing or sitting jobs. By educating on the prevention and treatment of vein disease, employees may experience fewer health care costs, fewer missed days of work, improved overall health, increased comfort, and productivity.
Chronic Venous Insufficiency, with Venous Reflux, is a marker of venous disease. Reflux may start mild and with time can progress. As blood pools in the elastic walls stretch, leading to progressive damage to the venous system. When the veins are large enough (3mm or >) to be seen or felt, they are known as varicose veins. Varicose veins increase the risk of blood clots, leg swelling, and pain.
The signs and symptoms of vein disease can be subtle or dramatic.. Swelling and skin changes, and other symptoms of heaviness, swelling, fatigue, aching, burning, stinging, night cramps, and restless legs, are associated with underlying vein disease.
While other factors are linked to vein disease, research has shown that long periods of standing or sitting are major players. More than 80 million Americans suffer from varicose veins, spider veins, leg swelling, venous ulcers, and related conditions. Unfortunately, vein problems are chronic and progressive. Without treatment, they get worse affecting the quality of life, well-being, and most importantly, worker productivity and long-term morale at their place of employment.
You may THINK your feet or legs are supposed to hurt after working a 12-hour shift, but that is not necessarily true. With a healthy vein system, one-way check valves keep the vein blood flowing back toward the heart. If these valves fail the venous blood can reflux or flow backward and pool in the legs when exposed to gravity. These veins dilate and become varicose and symptomatic.
Varicose veins have also been associated with chronic heart and circulatory disorders, as well as recent studies showing an increased risk for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE).
It’s just 3 easy steps…
Prolonged standing and upright posture stresses the vein circulation of the lower leg and reduce the effectiveness of the venous–muscle pump mechanisms. Medical grade graduated compression socks apply pressure to your legs, encouraging venous return, limits leg swelling and helps prevent varicose veins.
Studies have shown that wearing compression socks can make a difference in your level of fatigue from standing or sitting all day. With the growing awareness of compression socks and their health benefits, modern styles and colors have emerged that make the garment as stylish as any socks you would find in a high-end department store.
While everyone will benefit from conservative therapy, symptomatic employees should still have a proper diagnostic vein screening and evaluation to determine if there is underlying vein disease.
Training and education are important in avoiding complications from prolonged standing or sitting in the work environment. Getting a ‘leg up’ by creating a healthy workforce is a great place to start and Vein Specialists of the South (VSS) is here to help with the process.
