Do Anxiety & Fear of Pain Keep You From Seeking Vein Care?

If the first question you ask your friend about their vein treatment is, “Did it hurt?” this blog is for you. We understand from clinical studies that “white coat anxiety” and fear of discomfort may keep some of you from seeking the vein care you need. However, avoiding care can allow your problems to get worse affecting your quality of life.

It does not have to be that way.

At Vein Specialists of the South (VSS), we care about your comfort and well-being while providing comprehensive vein treatments so you can enjoy your life again. That is why we offer options to alleviate your anxiety before, during, and after your vein procedures in our Locust Grove, Macon, and Warner Robins, Georgia vein clinic locations.

Our Vein Procedures are Minimally Invasive

We want to put your mind at ease about your vein care. At VSS we offer minimally invasive ‘walk-in, walk-out vein care’ that meets your needs.

What can you expect from a varicose vein procedure at Vein Specialists of the South?

  2. Most all procedures are performed in the comfort of our office. Our patients Walk-In, Walk-Out® with little to no downtime.
  3. Using a gentle local anesthesia technique you can avoid the risk of general anesthesia.
  4. Thanks to medical advances most people go back to their normal daily routine in a day or two.
  5. Post-treatment care includes a self-adhesive bandage and compression of the treatment area along with acetaminophen to manage discomfort.

A Relaxing Environment

At VSS your treatment team is focused on your comfort. It’s a friendly smile, a gentle welcome including a warm blanket and music of your choice to relax by. At that moment you can sense that we are here to ‘help’ you along on your journey to Better Veins for Life®.

Attention to Your Needs

Seeking your well-being, we talk with you to allay your anxiety. It’s one of our favorite times, as we learn about you, your family, and what is important to you. It is our opportunity to welcome you as part of the VSS Family.

Stress Relievers That Make a Difference

Often it is the little things that matter most like a stress ball to squeeze and a buzzer which provides a vibratory distraction. Using one or both makes a difference with patients telling us that they feel ‘very little discomfort’ with the numbing process.

Anxiety Medication is Available

Despite our best effort, some patients need mild oral sedation. In those instances, we offer prescription medications to ease your anxiety during your procedure. These medications can be helpful in managing anxiety and discomfort

If you are interested in learning more about our anti-anxiety medications, please speak with one of our team members. We would be happy to answer any questions you have and help you find the right medication for you.

Note with mild oral sedation you will be relaxed but not ‘asleep’. However, with mild oral sedation you will need someone to drive you home following your treatment.

Pro-Nox Nitrous Oxide Helps Relieve Physical Discomfort and Anxiety

pronox nitrous oxide for anxiety relief during medical procedures

If “feeling out of it” doesn’t appeal to you, you may want to consider low-dose nitrous oxide (Pro-Nox) similar to what you might have had at your dentist. Self-administered Pro-Nox is an alternative to relieve anxiety and physical discomfort during procedures, and it’s available at Vein Specialists of the South.

Pro-Nox is administered through a patient-controlled breathing device similar to a nebulizer. Inhaling the 50/50 mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen directly results in an instant feeling of relaxation and well-being. Best of all, Pro-Nox is available on an as-needed basis so you can relax during your procedure without feeling drowsy or out of control.

Unlike mild oral sedation, the effects of Pro-Nox wear off very quickly, so you can expect to be able to drive yourself home following your procedure if you so choose.

If you are interested in learning more about Pro-Nox, please speak with your provider before your treatment. We would be happy to answer any questions and help you feel more comfortable during your vein procedure.
