A Novel Non Surgical Varicose Vein Treatment
Vein Specialists of the South is pleased to offer Varithena , the first FDA approved injectable foam treatment that corrects reflux in the saphenous veins, reduces the appearance of bulging veins and relieves discomfort. If you have varicose veins, they may throb or feel itchy, heavy, achy and even painful. This injectable treatment helps relieve those feelings while leaving your legs looking and feeling better. Varithena is specifically used to treat problems with the great saphenous vein (GSV) and surrounding veins. You are a good candidate for this treatment if you have varicose veins with or without pain. The treatment is an alternative to the typical procedures for varicose veins.
About Your Non Surgical Varicose Vein Treatment with Varithena
The first step toward varicose vein treatment with Varithena is setting up a consultation. If the treatment is right for you, we provide you with instructions for pre-treatment care. Since this is not a surgical treatment, sedation is not required. After numbing the area about the size of your fingernail to ensure your comfort, the doctor will insert a small needle or catheter tube into the problematic area of your varicose veins. The Varithena foam channels into the vein under ultrasound guidance, causing it to collapse. When it collapses, the blood flows into nearby healthy veins. From start to finish, this procedure usually takes about an hour or less, depending on how many veins must be treated.
After Varithena – Your Varicose Vein Post-treatment Care
Although you can typically resume light activities the same day as your treatment, it is important to follow your doctor’s post-treatment care instructions. Avoid heavy activities and workouts immediately after your procedure. One of the most important tasks you have is to keep your bandage dry. If it becomes wet, you must change it immediately. Keep the bandage on and dry for at least 48 hours after your Varithena treatment. Be sure to attend your follow-up visit after your treatment. Your doctor will discuss this with you and schedule an optimal time.
For at least 14 days following your treatment, you must wear a compression stocking on the leg that was treated to prevent blood flow through the treated vein or other complications. If your treatment involves the veins above your knee, you will have to wear thigh-high stockings. You may wear knee-high stockings for treatments well below the knee. Do not work out for a week after having your treatment. The only exercise you should do on top of your normal daily activities is at least 10 minutes of walking. Keep walking for 10 minutes or more each day for the entire month after your treatment.
