Most people don’t realize how sophisticated and interconnected with the rest of the body the vascular system is until there’s a problem. When a problem does develop, you need specialty care from an expert who understands how to identify the root cause and treat it effectively the first time.
As leaders in vein care with decades of experience, our providers at Vein Specialists of the South offer a wide range of proven vein treatments to address spider veins, varicose veins, venous ulcers, lymphedema and more. Especially if this is your first vein treatment, understanding how each approach works can give you much greater confidence as you navigate the process with our team.
Varicose Vein Treatment
Varicose veins are enlarged, bulging veins that often present with a twisted, blue or purple appearance. They develop when the valves in your veins that prevent the backflow of blood are weakened or damaged, allowing blood to pool and increase pressure in the affected vein. In many cases, varicose veins cause aching, burning, swelling and cramping in the legs.
Benefits of Varicose Vein Treatment
Surgical vein stripping procedures used to be the primary approach for varicose veins, but have now been replaced by much less invasive alternatives. These include energy-based endovenous treatments like Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) and Radiofrequency Closure (RF), as well as injectable treatments like Varithena and others.
These modern approaches offer many advantages over traditional procedures, including:
- Minimal downtime
- In-office treatment
- Local, not general anesthesia
- Rapid relief of leg heaviness, swelling and other symptoms
Who Is Varicose Vein Treatment For?
If you have visible bulging veins, especially with associated skin changes, you may benefit from varicose vein treatment. Patients with leg pain, swelling, and fatigue that worsen throughout the day also benefit greatly from varicose vein treatment.
The Treatment Process
After your comprehensive consultation, our team at Vein Specialists of the South will recommend endovenous thermal ablation, VenaSeal, ambulatory phlebectomy, or a combined approach based on the nuances of your case.
Endovenous thermal ablation involves the insertion of a very fine catheter into the vein, after which radiofrequency or laser energy is emitted from the catheter to heat and close the vein. VenaSeal is similar, except this approach uses a special adhesive to close the vein. Finally, ambulatory phlebectomy is a much more discreet, office-based alternative to surgical vein stripping, using very small incisions to precisely remove surface-level veins.
Recovery and Aftercare
Most patients walk out of our office immediately following treatment and resume normal activities within a day or two. We typically recommend wearing compression stockings for a period after treatment, avoiding strenuous exercise for a few days and walking regularly to promote healthy circulation.
Spider Vein Treatment
Also caused by faulty vein valves, spider veins are typically less severe than varicose veins, but are still an aesthetic concern for many people. They present as thin, branching blue and purple lines that fan out across the skin like a spider web.
Many cases of spider veins are asymptomatic, but some people still experience burning, itching, and aching sensations in the affected area. Sometimes, spider veins are caused by chronic venous insufficiency, which means symptoms are likely to progress if not properly addressed.
Benefits of Spider Vein Treatment
We offer two safe and effective treatments for spider veins at Vein Specialists of the South (see below), both of which dramatically reduce the appearance of veins with quick and convenient sessions.
Benefits include:
- Short sessions lasting 20 to 30 minutes
- High safety, efficacy and consistency
- Minimally invasive approaches
- No downtime
Who Is Spider Vein Treatment For?
Anyone bothered by the appearance of spider veins, which often present on the legs or face, may be a candidate for spider vein treatment. Our providers will evaluate your overall health, the severity of the concern and other factors to clearly outline your eligibility for our treatment options.
What to Expect from the Treatment Process
The two spider vein treatments we offer are sclerotherapy, which is the FDA-approved gold standard, and laser therapy.
Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a special solution, or “sclerosing” agent, into the targeted vein with a fine needle. Once injected, the solution irritates the vein walls, causing them to collapse in on themselves. Over time, the body reabsorbs the sealed vein.
Laser therapy offers a completely noninvasive option for patients with particularly small spider veins (especially on the face) and those who prefer to avoid needles. With this approach, your provider directs the laser light at the spider vein(s), precisely heating and collapsing the targeted blood vessels while preserving the surrounding skin. For laser therapy, we work closely with Spa Medical, our sister business, to ensure patients receive seamless, expert care under one trusted family of practices.
Recovery and Aftercare
Both treatments allow immediate return to normal activities. For the best results, avoid sun exposure on treated areas, wear compression stockings as directed and stay active with regular walking.
Venous Ulcer Treatment
Venous ulcers are open wounds that develop when vein disease prevents proper blood flow and healing in the lower legs. Typically, ulcers are preceded by gradually worsening skin changes, from early reddening to texture changes. Venous ulcers are often painful, can become infected and will take months to heal if left untreated.
Benefits of Venous Ulcer Treatment
Any patient with an active venous ulcer needs the underlying vein disease to be addressed in order to accelerate the already compromised healing process.
Once the root cause is addressed, benefits of venous ulcer treatment include:
- Decreased pain
- Improved circulation
- Closure of the wound
- Improved skin texture and quality
- Decreased risk of infection
Who Is Venous Ulcer Treatment For?
If you have a wound on your lower leg or ankle that seems to resist the healing process, especially if you also have varicose veins or associated symptoms, you may need specialized vein care to prevent worsening.
What to Expect From the Treatment Process
The approach we follow in any given case of venous ulcer depends on several factors, including the underlying cause, the size and severity of the ulcer, associated skin changes and more. An effective venous ulcer treatment plan is comprehensive and adaptable, providing targeted interventions appropriate to each stage of healing.
Specifically, we offer wound cleansing and debridement, negative wound pressure therapy, lymphedema treatment, and specialized bandages meant to accelerate healing. If your ulcer is caused by vein disease, we will recommend whichever of the above treatments is most appropriate to address the problem at the source.
Recovery and Aftercare
Though expert venous ulcer treatment dramatically reduces healing time, more advanced ulcers can still take several weeks or months to fully heal. Compression therapy, regular follow-ups and mindful wound care are all essential to the process.
Lymphedema Treatment
Blockages or other issues affecting the lymphatic system can result from infections, cancer treatment, injury, genetic factors and other causes. When lymph fluid can’t flow properly due to a blockage, pressure buildup and potentially significant swelling (lymphedema) can occur.
Benefits of Lymphedema Treatment
While lymphedema is a chronic condition, proper treatment can still make dramatic improvements in quality of life.
These improvements include:
- Reduced swelling
- Improved comfort
- Reduced infection risk
- Greater mobility and activity tolerance
Who Is Lymphedema Treatment For?
If you notice consistent swelling in an arm or leg, often accompanied by a feeling of heaviness or tightness, we strongly advise you to be evaluated for lymphedema. Early detection and treatment, including lymphedema treatment at Vein Specialists of the South, can prevent a range of complications.
What to Expect From the Treatment Process
Manual lymphatic drainage is an effective and completely noninvasive massage-based technique that allows the trapped fluid to move through the lymphatic system normally. Compression therapy (medical-grade wraps, sleeves and more), exercise programs, and skincare support are also key pillars of an effective lymphedema therapy plan.
Consistency Is Key
Successful lymphedema management is about incorporating the above treatments into your normal routine for consistent, long-term symptom relief. If a change in your symptoms occurs, our team is here to provide any needed adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which treatment is right for me?
During your consultation, our vein specialists perform a comprehensive evaluation, including a physical exam and ultrasound imaging. This assessment allows us to precisely pinpoint any underlying issues and plan treatments accordingly.
Are vein treatments covered by insurance?
Many varicose vein treatments are covered by insurance when medically necessary, particularly if you’re experiencing symptoms like pain, swelling or skin changes. On the other hand, spider vein treatments are typically considered cosmetic and not covered. We are happy to discuss your potential coverage as part of the consultation process.
Can vein problems come back after treatment?
Successfully treated veins will not return, but this doesn’t mean new vein issues won’t develop over time due to genetics, aging processes and other factors. Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising consistently and taking breaks from prolonged periods of sitting or standing can all help prevent new vein problems from developing.
How quickly will I see results from my treatment?
Results vary by treatment type. Spider vein and smaller varicose vein improvements become visible over roughly four to six weeks as your body absorbs treated veins. Larger varicose veins may take three months or longer to fully respond. Symptom relief often begins much sooner, with many patients noticing reduced pain and swelling within days of treatment.
