When Are Visible Veins Healthy?
You may enjoy the look of your visible veins, believing they show that you are in shape; or you may be self-conscious about their appearance or worried that they are symptoms of an underlying disease. As you get in shape, your muscles become more defined and you lose some of your subcutaneous fat. Both of these changes may make your veins more visible. You may also notice your veins more if you have fair skin or as you age. In these cases, the visible veins are most likely healthy.
When Should I Worry About Visible Veins?
Visible veins are unhealthy if they are caused by venous reflux and pooling of blood. This reflux can lead to pain and other uncomfortable sensations, such as burning, itching, and restlessness. Not only can you experience discomfort, but you may also feel embarrassed about the way your legs look. Do you hide your legs and avoid wearing shorts or your swimsuit to the beach or pool during the summer months?
Veins that cause pain are most likely larger bulging varicose veins. Spider veins do not generally cause health problems but may cause some itching and embarrassment. Similar to varicose veins, spider veins (<1-3 mm) are so named because of their spider-like appearance. Varicose veins (3 mm+) are larger, bumpy and twisted, and they can cause problems such as sores, ulcers, and even blood clots. Both spider veins and varicose veins can rupture and bleed.
