If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed or concerned about a recent lymphedema diagnosis, know that expert treatment is available at Vein Specialists of the South. Beyond treatment itself, having a sound understanding of how this condition works and what causes it can help you to recognize the signs your body is showing you and respond accordingly.

What Exactly is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a condition associated with swelling of one or more of your extremities due to a problem with the lymphatic system. Your lymphatic system runs parallel to your circulatory system and is similar to it in many ways. When your lymph vessels or organs are damaged or blocked, lymph fluid can no longer drain properly. This results in a buildup of fluid, causing that telltale swelling and the symptoms that come with it.

When left untreated, lymphedema can cause skin infections, skin hardening, reduced mobility and ongoing discomfort. With proper treatment and management, anyone with lymphedema can significantly improve their quality of life.

What Are the Main Causes of Lymphedema?

Lymphedema falls into two main categories: primary and secondary.

Primary Lymphedema

This less common form of lymphedema is caused by an abnormality in the development of the lymphatic system. Primary lymphedema is congenital, but the condition may develop during adolescence or young adulthood. Since there is a genetic component involved, primary lymphedema can be passed down to children from their parents.

While primary lymphedema can’t be prevented or cured, recognizing and treating the issue as early as possible can prevent complications that would require more intensive care later on.

Secondary Lymphedema

Secondary lymphedema is the much more common form of the condition that develops as a result of damage to the lymphatic system. This damage can come from several sources, including:

Cancer Treatment: Radiation therapy and surgical removal of lymph nodes during cancer treatment are among the most common causes of secondary lymphedema. Breast cancer survivors, in particular, have an increased risk of developing lymphedema in their arms.

Surgery: Any surgical procedure that involves removing or damaging lymph nodes or vessels can disrupt normal lymph drainage. This includes surgeries for various types of cancer, as well as vascular surgeries.

Radiation Therapy: Radiation can cause scarring and inflammation of lymph nodes and lymph vessels, impairing their ability to drain fluid properly.

Infection: Severe infections involving the lymph nodes or lymphatic vessels can cause damage that leads to lymphedema. In tropical regions, parasitic infections are a common cause of lymphedema.

Injury or Trauma: Serious injuries that damage the lymphatic system can result in chronic swelling and lymphedema.

Obesity: Excess weight puts additional stress on the lymphatic system and can impair proper lymph drainage.

Venous Insufficiency: Chronic vein problems can contribute to lymphedema by increasing fluid accumulation in the tissues.

How Is Lymphedema Treated?

While there is currently no cure for lymphedema, several effective treatment options can help manage symptoms, reduce swelling and improve your quality of life. At Vein Specialists of the South, we offer personalized, highly effective lymphedema treatments tailored to your needs.

Manual Lymph Drainage: This specialized massage technique uses gentle, rhythmic movements to facilitate the proper movement and draining of lymph fluid.

Compression Therapy: Medical-grade compression garments help prevent fluid accumulation by providing graduated pressure that supports lymph drainage. These garments are custom-fitted to ensure comfort and effectiveness. Pneumatic compression sleeves are also useful for providing intermittent compression.

Exercise and Movement: Your vascular system has the heart to help pump fluid, but the lymphatic system relies heavily on muscle activity to move fluid along. Just like squeezing a tube of toothpaste, engaging your muscles with gentle exercises (e.g., walking or marching) puts pressure on the lymph vessels, helping the flow.

Skin Care: Proper and consistent skin hygiene practices are essential to prevent infections, which can worsen lymphedema. This includes keeping the affected area clean and moisturized, avoiding injuries and proactively treating even smaller cuts and scrapes.

Pneumatic Compression Devices: These devices use inflatable sleeves to apply intermittent pressure, helping move fluid out of the affected limb.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can lymphedema be cured?

While lymphedema cannot be cured, it can be effectively managed with proper treatment. Complete Decongestive Therapy, compression garments and ongoing maintenance can significantly reduce swelling and improve your quality of life. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing progression and complications.

How do I know if I have lymphedema or just regular swelling?

Lymphedema typically causes persistent swelling that doesn’t resolve after you elevate the affected limb(s). The affected limb may feel heavy or tight, and the skin may appear stretched or shiny.

Will I need to wear compression garments forever?

Most people with lymphedema need to wear compression garments long-term to maintain results and prevent swelling from returning. However, with consistent treatment and self-care, some patients can reduce their reliance on compression over time.

Is lymphedema covered by insurance?

Many, but not all, insurance plans cover lymphedema treatment, especially when it’s related to cancer treatment or other medical conditions. Our staff can help you understand your insurance benefits and explore payment options during your consultation.

Can losing weight help my lymphedema?

Maintaining a healthy weight can definitely help manage lymphedema symptoms. Excess weight puts additional stress on the lymphatic system and can worsen swelling. However, weight loss should be part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes proper lymphedema therapy under medical supervision.
