How Does Ambulatory Phlebectomy Work?

At VSS, custom treatment plans are developed by listening to your concerns, completing a detailed exam including a vein mapping ultrasound, and guiding you through your treatment options. The secret to success is identifying the underlying cause of the visible vein problem and creating a plan to deal with both. If you have underlying reflux in the ‘saphenous veins’ and varicose veins, we will most likely pair one of the ‘Endovenous Ablation’ modalities (which were pioneered in Georgia by Dr. Harper) with ambulatory phlebectomy.

For aching, burning, itchy, and bulging varicose veins, our treatment of choice is a minimally invasive procedure, micro ambulatory phlebectomy. By combining endovenous ablation (when needed) with ambulatory phlebectomy, you benefit from correction of the saphenous reflux and immediate removal of the painful and unsightly varicose veins. In selected cases, the bulging varicose veins may be treated with ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy (Varithena^®). Clinical studies prove that treating your varicose veins reduces your risk of blood clots and improves your results.

Oral sedation and/or nitrous oxide are offered for anxious patients, though most patients find that no sedation is needed. The effects of the local anesthetic last for around 4-6 hours, which provides excellent pain management following your procedure.

With ambulatory phlebectomy, micro-incisions (2-3mm) are made and the diseased veins are gently removed with delicate, precision instruments. Because the incisions are tiny, they rarely require stitches, and even the largest varicose veins pass through them easily. What is Ambulatory Phlebectomy Treatment Like?

Your ambulatory phlebectomy begins with the identification and marking of the diseased veins, followed by the gentle application of tumescent local anesthesia. If requested, you may also be administered a mild oral sedative. The bad veins are gently removed through micro-incisions (2-3) mm). Once treatment is completed, your legs are bandaged. You can expect the procedure and immediate aftercare to take several hours, as we ensure the best possible outcome for you.

What Results Will I See?

The results of your ambulatory phlebectomy are immediately visible. Complete healing may take several days to a few weeks, but your bulging veins are gone. Your vein related symptoms subside as you heal.

Is There Any Downtime?

There is little to no downtime in most patients. You may expect some bruising and swelling for several days, but compression stockings are recommended for faster healing. Most patients return to work within a day or two, and gentle daily exercise, such as walking, is encouraged.
