What Causes Hand Veins?
Dilated veins on your hands or arms, usually signify good vein health. Treating them is, therefore, cosmetic. Your hand veins normally become more visible over time as you lose subcutaneous fat and your skin gets thinner. Also, as we age we may have medical treatments requiring intravenous injections. If the veins become red, or tender after an IV treatment, the problem may become medical, and covered by insurance.

What Treatments are Available for Hand Veins?

Ambulatory Phlebectomy
is an office-based procedure performed under a gently local anesthetic. The cosmetic veins are marked prior to numbing, followed by micro-incisions (2mm) over the involved veins. The problem veins are gently removed with a specialty hook. This procedure poses little risk since only superficial veins are removed and to the hand vein circulation in deeper layers is unaffected. Of all the treatments, this provides the most immediate and longest-lasting results.

Cosmetic Dermal Filler
follows the principles used to treat cosmetic facial concerns by adding volume. The dermal filler is placed in the subcutaneous layer where you’ve lost fatty tissue, recreating youthful-looking hands that hide the prominent veins. This option will need to be repeated as fillers last around a year.

Sclerotherapy
involves injecting a sclerosing agent into the unwanted vein to cause the vein to collapse and scar closed. The body will reabsorb this closed vessel and reroute blood into the deep veins of the hand, where it can’t be seen.
What Results Will I See?
With both ambulatory phlebectomy and dermal fillers, results are immediate as either the vein is removed, or the filler has disguised it. Ambulatory phlebectomy results are more lasting, but there’s the chance other veins may become prominent over time. Dermal fillers need to be repeated, typically every 12 months. Sclerotherapy requires 2-4 treatments, and results become visible after the 2nd treatment. These results are also long-lasting.
Is There Any Downtime?
While you may experience temporary bruising, tenderness, or discomfort with each of these treatments, they don’t require much downtime. Compression bandages may be recommended for all but the dermal filler procedure.
